Evita Argentina rallied to beat Stardom Bound by a length Wednesday in the $150,000 feature race for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar. Ridden by Tyler Baze, Evita Argentina covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.51 and paid $17.20, $6.40 and $3.60. Stardom Bound returned $3.80 and $2.80, and Emmy Darling paid $2.80 to show.
Archipenko draws top spot for Arlington Million (AP)
Archipenko won the draw for the Arlington Million, taking the No. 1 post position for Saturday's race at Arlington Park. The 4-year-old drew the spot Wednesday from a field of eight for the 1-mile race. The horse has raced in the Middle East and Europe so far this year. Archipenko has three wins going into the weekend race as a favorite.
Doc N Roll wins NY Stallion Stakes (AP)
Doc N Roll edged Gold Vendetta by a neck Wednesday in the $150,000 New York Stallion Stakes' Cab Calloway Division for 3-year-old colts and geldings at Saratoga Race Course. Eibar Coa rode the Barclay Tagg-trained Doc N Roll, owned by Sackatoga Stable. That partnership campaigned 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide.
Storm Cat colt brings in top price at sale (AP)
A colt by Storm Cat brought in the highest price of the Fasig-Tipton sale of selected yearlings after being purchased for $2 million on Tuesday, the second session of the two-day sale. The horse was purchased by Michael Magnier, son of John Magnier of Coolmore Stud, an international racing and breeding operation.
Curlin to race next on dirt at Saratoga (AP)
Curlin is heading back to dirt for his next race -- the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga -- but his majority owner says that doesn't necessarily mean the turf experiment is over. Jess Jackson announced Tuesday that the reigning Horse of the Year will next run in the $500,000 Grade I Woodward on Aug. 30. Curlin made his turf debut last month, finishing second in the Man o' War Handicap at Belmont Park.

Curlin works out ahead of race announcement (AP)
Curlin, the 2007 Horse of the Year, worked five furlongs and is "in a beautiful rhythm," his trainer said Monday, the day before his next race is scheduled to be announced. Majority owner Jess Jackson, who was present for the workout at Saratoga's Oklahoma training track, will announce when and where Curlin will race next on Tuesday.

Big Brown made it to the winner's circle after the $1 million Haskell Invitational. Until the final six strides, though, the bounce-back victory was in doubt. In a too-close-for-comfort return after a last-place finish in the Belmont Stakes eight weeks ago, Big Brown staged a sensational rally and beat 20-1 long shot Coal Play by 1 3/4 lengths Sunday in front of a Monmouth Park crowd of 43,132.

Del Mar to cut purses for 1st time in 30 years (AP)
Del Mar will reduce purses by 3.5 percent, the first reduction in more than 30 years. The cuts, which begin Aug. 13, will amount to about $10,000 per day, according to Michael Ernst, the seaside track's chief operating officer. The reductions were triggered by a downturn in on-track handle and a slowdown in account wagering business, he said Friday.

Ready Set withstood a charging Web Gem and a claim of foul to win the $750,000 West Virginia Derby on Saturday. Ridden by Julien Leparoux, Ready Set covered the 1 1/8-mile course at the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort in 1 minute, 52.03 seconds. Web Gem's jockey, Jorge Chavez, alleged interference on the part of Ready Set with 3 1/2 furlongs remaining, but the claim was rejected.
Deweycheatumnhowe wins Hambletonian (AP)

Deweycheatumnhowe was all business Saturday in winning the $1.5 million Hambletonian. The colt named for a comedy routine about a crooked law firm became the first unbeaten winner of the 3-year-old trotting classic. Ray Schnittker, the driver, trainer and co-owner, was thrilled with the victory at Meadowlands Racetrack, although he suspected it would happen differently.

For the most part, Rick Dutrow has kept a low profile since Big Brown's inexplicable last-place finish in the Belmont Stakes nearly two months ago.
